Trail
Improvement Efforts In
March of 2004 Madawaska recreational trail enthusiasts met with
officials of the Maine Winter Sports Center (MWSC) to organize
an effort to improve Madawaska’s four-season trail system.
A series of meetings with representatives from the MWSC, the
town’s Board of Selectmen, the Madawaska Recreation Department,
landowners, and School Department personnel prompted town officials
to appropriate funds to hire a professional trail designer affiliated
with the MWSC.
In May, John Morton re-designed
the long-standing 5-kilometer trail used by the high school
ski team into a 10.5-kilometer system that will meet the needs
of all of Madawaska’s skiers and visitors.
The new trail improvements are
scheduled for construction in the summer of 2005 and the re-design
will accommodate skiers of all ability levels. |
The plan calls for a new start/finish
approximately 1000 feet above the current start area on Summer
Street. This vantage point will provide for more variety in
the trail system and allow all skiers to begin their skiing
adventures from a level start area located within the protection
of a forested area.
The Four Seasons Trail Association,
working with landowners and town officials, will help implement
this exciting trail improvement and will gladly accept any form
of volunteer assistance to accomplish the tasks at hand including
but not limited to: brush and tree removal, sign installation,
culvert installations, grading and ditching work. Please contact
us to sign on for next summer’s work. |
